Happy International Sunscreen Day!

In honour of our second favourite day of the year, Hemp Day is our favourite, but that's beside the point; On Friday this week is International Sunscreen day and we want to celebrate everyone being sun smart.

Sunscreen awareness has been increasing globally thats to a rise in education predominately through social media. We can see from Google Trends that search interest in Australia for the term 'sunscreen' has been growing dramatically from 2016, showing that Australia's are becoming more sun safe. Whats even better is that Iin the last 10 years, Search Interest on Google for people looking for the best sunscreen in Australia has risen by 933.33%, this is because Australia is at the forefront of cosmetic technology when it comes to sunscreens and we truely have some of the best and most advanced sunscreens in the world.

However, with all this extra education coming from content creators and influencers on social there is still a-lot of miss information and confusion around sunscreen application and use, so here are a few cardinal rules to follow along with for easy every day sun protection.

Quantity over Quality

When it comes to sunscreen, quantity is what's most important; there are hundreds of incredible sunscreen brands in Australia which are cheap and affordable to everyone; that's why it's most important we prioritise quantity. This means using the correct amount for each body part (remember 1/4 of a teaspoon for your face) and reapplying every 2 hours.

50+ makes a difference

50+ SPF in sunscreens makes a difference in the protection you are getting in the sun. Therefore, we highly suggest ensuring you are using a 50+ SPF sunscreen for your face and at least a 30+ SPF sunscreen for your body.

Don't makeup the rules

Remember that SPF in your makeup or sunscreen powders does not give you enough coverage for sufficient SPF protection. This is because the amount you would have to use to cover your face adequately is far more than you would use in an everyday makeup application.

It's not Cocktail Hour

Lastly, never mix or cocktail your SPF with other products; this can destabilise your sunscreen and weaken its protection. You should always apply your sunscreen last in your skincare routine and before you start your makeup application.

Our favourites

Below isn't a definitive list; however, it's a few favourite face sunscreens that we love and believe compliment the Vela Days Range.
